Accounts

Primary account, currencies, decimals and transfers

An account is where money is kept or spent from: bank, cash, credit card, savings. Each transaction sits in one account, and totals and budgets add up from them.

Starting balance

When you create an account, enter the Starting balance: the money already in it. It goes in as a balance correction, so it doesn't count as the month's income.

Primary account and app currency

The primary account is the one with the star on the Accounts page (on a phone, under More); tap another account's star to change it. It sets:

  • the account chosen for new transactions, when you don't have another account selected on Home;
  • the currency of totals and reports;
  • the currency other accounts' amounts are converted to.

To change the app's currency, edit the primary account and pick another currency, or go to Settings › General › Primary currency.

Multiple currencies

Each account has one currency. Macuta converts balances to the primary account's currency in summaries and reports. Accounts in different currencies are part of the Gold plan. See Multiple currencies.

Decimal places

Decimal precision sets how many digits you can enter after the decimal point for an account. With 2, you can enter 1.23; with 0, only whole numbers. Amounts are shown rounded to this precision.

Transfers

To move money between two accounts, use a transfer: Macuta creates a pair of transactions that don't count as income or expense. See Transfers between accounts.

Credit cards

Create an account for each card and log card purchases in it. Pay the card with a transfer from the account the money comes from. See Credit cards.

Fix the balance

If an account's balance is off, use a balance correction: it changes the account total without counting as income or expense.

Create and edit accounts

On the Accounts page (on a phone, under More) you can create accounts, change their order and edit existing ones. On the Copper plan you have three accounts (archived ones count too); on Silver and Gold, as many as you want.

Archive accounts

An account you no longer use (a bank you closed, a cancelled card) can be archived: edit it and tap Archive account. It no longer shows on Home or when choosing the account for a transaction; its history stays and its balance still counts in net worth. On the Accounts page it shows the Archived label. The primary account can't be archived.
