A budget is a plan for what you expect to spend (or save) over a period. It helps you set limits, see where your money goes and make better decisions.
Create a budget
In the Budgets tab, tap New budget. On the Copper plan you have one budget (archived ones count too); on Silver and Gold, as many as you want.
Budget types
There are two types, and the type can't change after you create the budget:
- Added only: counts only the transactions you add to it. Good for one-off budgets, like a holiday.
- All transactions: counts every transaction that matches the chosen categories and filters, on its own. Good for budgets that repeat, like monthly spending.
Filters
In an all-transactions budget, you choose which transactions count: for example, including income in a spending budget (which lowers the amount spent). Tap Transactions to include to choose the filters; each one has its explanation next to it. You also choose the categories to include or exclude and the accounts.
Exclude a transaction
To take a transaction out of an all-transactions budget, edit the transaction, tap More options › Exclude from budget and pick the budget.
Periods
A budget's period repeats on its own, unless you choose Custom. For a monthly budget starting on the 21st, pick a date on the 21st and a period of 1 month. A custom period runs from one date to another and doesn't repeat. See also The month starting on payday.
Category spending goals
Inside a budget, you can set limits per category: edit the budget and tap Set category spending goals. Each goal can be a percentage of the budget or an amount.
Reading the budget graph
The graph shows how much you've spent through the period. The dashed line marks today and your average daily spend so far: where they cross shows where you should be to stay on budget.
Past periods
In the budget's menu, choose Budget history to see previous periods (Silver and Gold plans). Custom budgets have no history, because they don't repeat.
A different amount each period
A budget has one amount for every period. To control each period separately, create custom budgets, one per period, and archive the old ones.
Archive
In the Budgets tab, tap the pencil (Edit budgets) and then the eye icon to hide a budget you no longer use. Archiving also removes it from Home.
